Nexgen Plants is a start-up company from the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences at the University of Queensland which is developing a novel platform technology that enables virus resistant plant varieties to be developed for major food crops used around the world.  The cornerstone of the technique is the discovery of a new class of small plant virus RNA molecules (miRNA) involved in modulating a plant defence response to virus attack.  The value of crop losses from viral infections is estimated to be more than US$60B annually and the Nexgen technology has the potential to dramatically alter plant breeding activities, improving on existing varieties, enabling them to be adapted to an increasingly diverse viral load caused by natural and man-made events.
