2 August 2021: Australian technology company LM Plus Pty Ltd has closed a $600,000 Seed financing round to fund process optimisation and proof of concept of a novel liquid metal technology that converts CO2 into saleable carbon flakes and oxygen

The round was led by commercialisation fund Uniseed, with Uniseed’s Co-Investment Fund, Stoic VC, also participating.  The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has also become a shareholder as part of a license agreement with the company.

LM Plus lead researcher, Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh, said the technology has the potential to deliver energy efficient carbon capture.

“Our liquid metal technology offers an unprecedent process for capturing and converting CO2 at an exceptionally competitive cost. We are very hopeful that this technology will emerge as the cornerstone of processes that will be internationally employed for mitigating the impact of greenhouse emissions”, Professor Kalantar-zadeh said.

“Climate change is widely recognised and the leading companies globally are investing billions of dollars to address their CO2 emissions as part of their sustainability objectives, we are developing a technology that could greatly contribute to this outcome”.

Uniseed Chief Executive Officer Dr Peter Devine said LM Plus has the potential to have an impact on CO2 emissions and deliver strong returns from the end products.

“We were attracted to this UNSW opportunity due to the strong technology and intellectual property that addresses a developing global market.  An added benefit is that this technology promises the public good of reducing greenhouse gas emissions” Dr Devine said.

“The research team led by Professor Kalantar-zadeh and Dr Dorna Esrafilzadeh are leaders in the field and have had previous success with commercialising their university research”.

The Deputy Director, Knowledge Exchange at the University of New South Wales, Dax Kukulj, said “LM Plus is an exciting early-stage deep technology company developing not only a product that is potentially of global benefit but also a new industry for Australia coming from research conducted at UNSW”.

Research and development will be conducted at UNSW through a research contract between the company and the university.    As the company moves towards production it will move to external facilities.

About LM Plus
A spin out from the University of New South Wales, LM Plus was established in 2021 to commercialise research that is able to capture solid carbon from carbon dioxide based on research by Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh and Dr Dorna Esrafilzadeh from UNSW and Dr Torben Daeneke from RMIT. The energy efficient carbon capture technology is looking to address the challenge of global CO2 emissions. For more information, visit https://lmplus.com.au
